Texas A&M football coach Jimbo Fisher was fired on Sunday, making it the largest buyout in college sports history. Fisher had a 45-25 record in his six seasons with the Aggies, including a 6-4 record this season.
Director of Athletics Ross Bjork made the announcement shortly after noon, stating that after careful analysis, he recommended a change in leadership for the program in order to reach its full potential. The decision was accepted by President Welsh and Chancellor Sharp. Bjork expressed appreciation for Fisher's time at Texas A&M and wished him the best in his future endeavors.
Texas A&M has struggled in recent years, losing 10 of their last 15 games against Power Five conference teams. Since the 2020 covid season, they have an overall record of 19-15. Fisher still had eight years remaining on his contract extension, which was signed before the 2021 season. The buyout is expected to cost the school around $76 million.
The school's board of regents met on Thursday to discuss Fisher's future, and despite a victory over Mississippi State on Saturday night, pressure continued to mount in College Station. Fisher had signed a 10-year contract extension with $95 million guaranteed in 2021, partly due to the possibility of him leaving for the top job at LSU.
